It is the national beer consumers group made up of regional groups of beer lovers,
who have got together to help protect the interests of the beer consumers. One of
their main aims is to promote Belgian beer. It took over from the former

Why in St.-Niklaas ?
The city of St.-Niklaas has a centrally located hall ideal to hold the ZBF. It has
great communication links from Antwerpen and Gent. It is only an hour away from
Brussels. There were lots of positive comments over the size of the hall in 2004 so
it was decided to keep the venue.

“Brewery” or
“Beer company” ?
Zythos wants clarity in the brewing world. That is why they only consider a brewery
to be a brewery if they own and use their own brewing equipment. Even if the brewer
actually makes his beer at another brewery Zythos categories this brewery as beer
company. A lot of beer companies who call themselves breweries, brew their beer by
a colleague or have it brewed by a colleague. For this reason Zythos allows the
breweries with their own installations one month extra to decide if they wish to
promote their beers at the ZBF. More info over the brewery / beer company discussion
can be found at http://www.zythos.be/acties/actie-bierfirma (in Dutch only).
ZYTHOS WISHES TO STRESS THAT NO JUDGEMENT IS MADE OVER THE QUALITY OF A BEER FROM
A BEER COMPANY OR A BREWERY!!!!
There are beer companies that brew original and unique beers as well as breweries that
produce bland and boring beers.

Why is the ZBF smoke free?
We are convinced that a smoke free environment offers the best place to taste
beers. Fine aromas can be lost in a smoky environment, something that is still
missing in most Belgian cafes (maybe one day?). In 2006 we tried a 50% smoke free
area, but we noticed that the room eventually became smoky. In 2007 Belgium announced
a smoking ban (watered down to avoid cafes) but covering restaurants, sports halls
and other public spaces, this gave us the chance to finally get smoking at the
festival to where it belongs outside, leaving you free to taste the beers hinder free.
